So, the hillsides of Cinque Terre are made up of hundreds of terraced gardens. Without the terraces, the mountain would be prone to landslides. It's important that these terraces continue to get farmed or the area would no longer be inhabitable. Farmers grow olives, grapes for wine, and lemons. Because the hillsides are so steep, they use these tram-like devices to get around their property. Pretty crazy.
